Your Bathroom Mirror

It’s easy to see the Divine in the sunrise, trees, oceans, mountains, animals, even the occasional shooting star. We tend to attach God to things outside of us, away from our control, beauty or reason. But what about in the mirror? What about the image you drag into the bathroom every morning as you wipe the sleep from your eyes? Do you see God? Do you see her love, his love pouring in and out of you as you move among your life’s work? Honestly, it's hard, right? We think so little of ourselves and then to think God loves us, lives in us, created us…tough stuff. Plus, it seems God rarely understands when the shit hits the fan. Or when we are flat on the bedroom floor crying, wondering if it will ever get better. Is He paying attention? We yell to God, scream, make deals and promises to simply allow the pain to end. We tend to live alone as an individual construct on the God journey. Thinking God is waiting for us to make a move or come out of the cyclone of human sin to finally see him smiling, welcoming us home. God is in you. Always will be. Jesus was born to us, lived among us, taught us, loved us, moved to us, helped wake us up to the face in the mirror. The idea of “Christ” is a love so deep it cares for us, protects us and will not leave us. Yes, this journey has a pile of responsibility we must attend to. We must reconcile who we are with the Divine. Meaning, we will always be learning to love God, ourselves and community, but that coupled with an overly aggressive human ego will be hard to see God in the mirror. We are so used to going it alone. Give yourself a giant spiritual break, you must. Allow kindness for yourself. Allow shame a day off in lieu of knowing you have value and worth as a loving created being. Allow the teachings of Christ to be your construct. Allow a risenness of self-awareness and new consciousness to be your hope, not bad theology built on guilt, past mistakes, prejudices, cultural assumptions, where you were born or who to. You have a shot of seeing yourself new and it's not predicated on how you believe, but how you transform into that love in the mirror. How you give, how you receive love will be your guidepost, your map, your way to which people will see you. You are not alone in the mirror. You are not alone on that bedroom floor. You are very much alive with a God that desires you to see Him lovingly staring back.

What do you see in the mirror?
