We Are Not Looking For Easy
Old school… ever played a game of Three-card Monte? They call it a confidence game. The idea is to trick a victim, or "mark" into betting cash, on the assumption they find a preselected card, the "money card,” among three face-down playing cards. It’s all bullshit designed to take your cash. The dealer makes it look easy to win but he’s sucking you in, hoping your belief and greed make him richer. The dealer ”loves” you out of your cash, “loves” you into submission. He strokes the ego, calms your fears until risk is stripped of wisdom. And… you lose. One minute you're skating into an easy 100 bucks the next you're beating yourself for getting scammed. Once you come face to face with how you were duped… you'll never be duped again, and in fact you’re free to never be scammed again. There are no easy ways. Easy ways are built on sand. Easy looks like you running on the assumption that sooner or later something will pay off without wisdom and hard work. For the record, the Monte dealer has spent hours perfecting his con. Hours learning to palm cards and hours learning to manipulate your ego and fear into submission. What is your easy right now? What is that one thing you are hoping turns out good without the work, the prayers, the relationships? And who are you listening to making it seem like a payoff? Our country right now is looking for easy. An easy way out of racism. We are listening to voices who would want us violent or at the very least oppositional to one another. We are playing an evil game of tit-for-tat not understanding that work, the work of reconciliation, redemption, justice, and of course forgiveness will restore and bear witness to the wisdom of love not hate. It takes work to meet oppression without “violence.” It takes work to meet uncertainty without fear. Work that starts with knowing sometimes losing is winning.
How will you stop racism?
