The Underlying Current Of Identity Crisis

Existential hair pulling is real! We get pushed against the cosmic wall from time to time asking, the BIG, “who am I? What am I doing?” or, “What should I be doing?” Meaning, we are searching for meaning! Everyone and their spiritual mother is offering bucket-loads of options to calm our need for meaning with more meaning. Most “get meaning now schemes” from religions to self actualization ideologies don’t fully solve our crisis in identity or meaning, but we take the bait looking for fulfillment. We “form” identity early in life as we try to keep ourselves safe and protected, feeling good enough or belonged to. Unfortunately forming identity through fear often creates a hotbed of self destructive protection mechanisms designed to keep us surviving just one more day. Survival has its purpose, but often becomes exhausting and certainly not the measure of who we are nor the meaning in our lives. What shall we do then to crush identity crisis or find meaning? Just one thing. Serve the needs of others. Yes! Fight against your need for meaning. Yes! It sounds nuts. Hear me out. Serving needs outside yourself has the miraculous cosmic ironic ability to bring you back to center, or “home” in who you are and helps identify personal meaning. Hooking your train to the needs of others brings the universe to you, bearing out a personal satisfaction that looks and tastes like freedom; having nothing to prove and nothing to lose. Pardon the French but we can be so fucking self-obsessed in our chase for identity and meaning that we miss the very thing we are chasing: love. Cast your energy into the needs of others. I guarantee you’ll find meaning and identity.

Are you interested in spiritual direction? Here’s how to get started.

Step 1. Schedule a complimentary, no-obligation consult. Do that here.

Step 2. Watch your email for questions from me. Before we hop on the phone, I’d like to know a bit about you and what you’d like to get out of spiritual direction or coaching with me.

Step 3. Hit “reply” to that email and answer the questions.

Step 4. At the scheduled time of your consult, we’ll talk! We’ll use the opportunity to make sure we’re the perfect fit.

Step 5. Then we’ll get started! If you decide to work with me, I’ll tell you the exact steps for getting started. If you decide not to work with me or if we aren’t a perfect fit, I’m happy to share other resources to help you get what you need.
