Tell On Yourself
Accountability is not just simple hand-holding. Accountability is the willingness to “tell on yourself.” Over the years I have been blessed with great mentors. People who helped find and point the way to true self and Divine love. That march included a dock worker from Cleveland. A spiritual director from San Diego and three foster kids from Grand Rapids. All of them with the greatest of ease have reflected me, the good, bad and ugly. That reflection at times so brutally painful as it finds spots of great selfishness, fear and unrelenting ego. Their accountability serves me, replenishes me, loves me. That dock worker would tell me all the time, “you must be willing to serve.” My spiritual director reminds me, “you have nothing to prove, nothing to lose.” Those foster kids show me love is not for the weak but the strong who can go the distance without building conditions among it’s sacrifice. Above all, accountability listens. It takes nothing personal and forms itself in love, compassion and service to those who would be willing, both in giving and receiving its divine power.
