Spiritual Autonomy Looks Like Narcissism
We will never believe alone. We can try, but it's a soup that never cooks and invariably leaves you isolated. Community will always be fundamentally a necessity. It fits the calling of love. Love demands we seek its essence both in giving and receiving. Our relationships with people, the earth and universe become the garden for which we plant, grow and harvest faith. There will be seasons we will kick against it and stay attached to the shadows of false self. In very few cases it might be a healthy preservation, but again it is a season and we must return to the love of God and community. “Lone Rangering” your faith is spiritual narcissism. The selfishness, sense of entitlement, lack of empathy and need for admiration can swell the heads and hearts of those bleeding deacons who think their communities can't live without them and better treat them well, or else! Keep careful watch on your ego and fear. Allow your community to see your fears. Allow them to see your doubt and help them know who you are. Our spiritual existence and experiences lean on the idea of self discovery in the face of Divine love and that will never be done alone.
