Rattle Your Privilege Into Service

Have you read the Gospels in the Bible? The books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John? I read them for the first time when I was 17. I started with the book of Matthew, the first book of the New Testament. I read straight through. I didn't draw a breath. I was mesmerized by Jesus. He sounded like a guy I wanted to know, hang with and be like. He was kind to the marginalized. He gave people attention. He loved, got pissed, was a bit sarcastic it was all there and it keeps my imagination fired to this very day, 37 years later. Most Christians want you to know how much they've changed as a result of meeting Jesus. To be honest I really don't think I have. Well, not in the ways you'd think anyway. I’m not filled with any more joy now than then. I’m not soft spoken or even close to being gentle. I seem to be the same loud mouthed redhead with a penchant for sarcasm, bent on learning to love. There is one huge thing that Jesus brought to the table that helped me into a larger understanding of love and unitive consciousness. His need to clearly help us see the barriers built by privilege that creates opposition and oppression. This one spark over the years has done well to burn down my assumptions about humans. Teaching me to watch the ways I “control” who I love and how I love. Truthfully, it has been quite humbling and stretching to see how my privilege has held judgment for so many cultural norms. Not the “Christian change” you were thinking, right? Today I do my best to blow apart the egoic and fear structures that dominate privilege. I’m not great at it yet but getting there. Jesus was a master storyteller. The seventh chapter of Mark put this in play well among several different stories, I  encourage you to read.

How has privilege created opposition or oppression in your life?
