Your Leadership
So much is said of the leadership of Jesus. One google search for Jesus and leadership produced millions of pages of content, all geared to build a better church and Christian influencers. At the end of his life Jesus had very few followers and friends. Most left his side so they wouldn't be killed. Jesus didn't write a book, song or poem. He taught folks a few prayers, fed the masses, healed people and said and did things that ultimately got him arrested and killed. If that sounds like leadership, I'm out! Why then is the American Evangelical culture so obsessed with His leadership? Why are there dozens of conferences and thousands of books written about His incredible style of leading? It’s too easy to pick on the church, so I will pick on myself. For years I was obsessed by individual achievement and success. I wanted it all. Great career, money, respect of my peers, industry and ultimately leadership. The ability to mold minds in my respective field of study or work. The opportunity to be recognized high above everyone else. I was in the TV industry for years and did very well. But I missed one thing: love. I missed the opportunity to lead myself, not into success but into a deep centered loving grace that would produce sacrificial movement for the good of the group, tribe and community. I missed you. Leadership became achievements and your recognition of said achievements. It had little to do with leadership and more to do with my over bloviated ego. I gotta wonder; as a faith, American Christians seem to have fallen in love with egoic leadership and not love. Jesus loved his friends and followers so much that He pinned them against a wall with parables that spoke directly to their ego. Not the pending ability to lead millions. He taught against oppression and opposition. He taught to love those marginalized and endangered by COVID-19. His platform wasn't leadership. It was compassion, grace and the ability to create community, not as leader but as a disciple.
