Unselfishness as consciousness

Unselfishness as consciousness, not random act. We are captivated by the story of sacrifice. Health care professionals working 24/7. Neighbors helping neighbors who need food and supplies. The business owner dipping into savings to pay workers. The countless men and women running up and down highways delivering essential goods. We are captivated by sacrifice because it lifts us into hope and that hope lives in us. I was reminded of this beautiful thought in the book of Galatians.

“Stoop down and reach out to those who are oppressed. Share their burdens, and so complete Christ’s law. If you think you are too good for that, you are badly deceived. Make a careful exploration of who you are and the work you have been given, and then sink yourself into that. Don’t be impressed with yourself. Don’t compare yourself with others. Each of you must take responsibility for doing the creative best you can with your own life. Be very sure now, you who have been trained to a self-sufficient maturity, that you enter into a generous common life with those who have trained you, sharing all the good things that you have and experience.”

Whatever your work is, consciously give it away to the needs of others. Be bold enough to be tired for the sake of others. Be strong enough to hold the needs of your community. Be compassionate without worrying about your sacrifice.
