The Prophet Calls Us Back To Justice

The week Jesus was killed he flips tables over in the Temple. Some suggest this was his way of making sure we don't corrupt our houses of worship. Perhaps. I would suggest in true Jesus fashion, he was disrupting the norm, looking to fight oppression. This was a protest, plain and simple. Jesus picks on the money changers and those selling animals of sacrifice. These were vendors renting space from priests who were looking to make cash off those they “serve.” The “good” spiritual leaders knew people were coming to worship God. They also knew there was profit to be made. Jesus wasn't pissed that day. Jesus wasn't offended. He was helping expose the rust in an institution taken over by greedy thieves. Jesus was overturning the role we play in the lives of the oppressed. Jesus was challenging us on how we take care of people. Jesus was asking us to listen deep to the sounds of mercy, grace and love. As we prepare for Easter I challenge you. What structures do you control that keep the poor, the orphaned, the widowed, and the marginalized from the love of community and Divine?
