Shame is insidious. It blinds the soul to love. It forces silence. It controls the present by living locked to the past. It tells you, “you are” the humiliation and distress of its circumstances. We all know its power. We hide deep in the shadows of self protection mechanisms hoping to never wear its scarlet letter, or at the very least ignore its pain. Shame is a formidable foe and doesn't go easy. It can scream for years. It will ruin happy occasions and trigger the most violent of emotional responses. Shame does have its natural enemies. Mercy, grace and forgiveness. Like Super Friends from the Hall of Justice they wait for the call, the opportunity to reconcile into truth. Swooping in, they restore and clarify our value and worth. Mercy, grace and forgiveness need words to fight. Not just words but specific words. Names, times, places, idle memories and the identity of feelings. The hardest part? You need to own the specifics out loud with God, friend or spouse. The words need the reflection of truth so you may wander through the shame aware it has nothing to do with WHO you are here and now.
