Radical Not Critical
Radical. Jesus bends down and grabs a woman in the dirt. She’s crying, barely clothed, breathing hard, hyperventilating. Jesus pulls her in and holds on tight. A judgemental crowd gathers holding rocks the size of fists wanting blood. “This woman has been caught in adultery, she should die!” proclaims the pretentious leader of this group. Jesus with his finger writes in the dirt for all to see then straightens up and says, “Go ahead! Any of you without sin, do it! Be the first to throw a stone at her.” Slowly he bends down and writes again. Those who heard began to walk away one at a time, the older ones first, until it's just Jesus and the woman alone. Jesus grabs her face, “Looks like no one condemes you!” Breathing easier, tears in her eyes, dirt streaks down her cheeks, “No one, Jesus,” she says. “Then neither do I.” Jesus declares, “Go! Leave the life you're leading.” Today, Look closely into your judgments. Look long into how you treat the marginalized. Look closely at how you deal with the criminal. Look deep into how you think about the morally bankrupt. Hear your past come to call as you reflect your own shame. Hold to the messages in the dirt. Join the common heartbreak of humanity in your own story and drop your critical stones.
