Opposition is Born in Fear
My first spiritual mentor, Tommy Cusick, would tell me, “It’s all about the fear. Get that and you’ll be O.K.” He was encouraging me to understand what fear was doing to me, doing to my relationships and doing to my faith. I was 17 when I met Tommy. He was in his late 60’s. He didn't say much but when he did it carried wisdom. His lessons about fear came at the cost of me looking at myself. It is hard to face fear. We’d rather run from it or cover it with addiction. The one thing I learned from the old man was all my opposition with people, places or things was based in fear. The fight in me had nothing to do with seeking justice as much as it had to do with the covering of safety and security; my safety and security. Every instance where I created opposition out of fear failed. Every. One. Leaving that way of living meant a lot of things. Putting away addiction. Putting away ego, and of course putting away fear.
