Keep What Will Never Own You
In the book of Mark, New Testament stuff, Jesus asks us to cut off hands and gouge out eyes if they lead us to sin. A lot going on there. If you're a literalist I hope you have great insurance. But no need to worry. Jesus’ ask has more to do with what owns you than what will cut you. Understanding what owns you comes with a bit of self honesty and humility. Honesty to see where you find your value and worth, and humility to admit value and worth are not found in people, places and things. So, what owns you? Who owns you? Could you be tied to addiction? Could codependent relationships chew in to the way you love yourself? Could an ideology be possessing your faith? Could be you are anchored in fear and ego creating a world where oppression and opposition own you. Jesus goes on to say, “Everyone will be salted with fire. Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again? Have salt among yourselves, and be at peace with each other.” Jesus is calling us away from what owns us: addictions, fear, ego, people, places, things, and into the fire of freedom where we create and sustain a salvation that relies on love, justice, mercy, forgiveness and healing. This will produce peace. Put your knife down, it’s OK!
