Heaven or Hell

Heaven or Hell is the essence for which you will live, not die. Afterlife attention has doomed us. Living for death leaves us empty to the present. We are so eager to assign eternity to our neighbors, friends, and communities. We love the rush of judgement. It feeds our very unhealthy need for certainty. Jesus was pushed to answer the pressing questions about the kingdom. He said this, “The kingdom of God doesn’t come by counting the days on the calendar. Nor when someone says, ‘Look here!’ or, ‘There it is!’ And why? Because God’s kingdom is already among you.” Was he talking about himself? Was he telling us eternity is already in your heart? Both? Perhaps he was simply suggesting we place our lives unreservedly into the moment, the present, and insist we acknowledge the desire to love and be loved. Maybe our chase for Heaven or Hell has more to do with our attachments to fear and ego than the purity of love in this very moment. Maybe learning to love “here and now” is the kingdom of God. And maybe at that point we can give up being strapped to behavioral ideologies that bind us to our life, death and eternity.

How do you love here and now?
