Fear Story

The fear story is the rolling narrative in our heads dominating whatever circumstance we are in. No doubt our circumstance right now could use a wise routine to help manage the fear story. At no time do we want either circumstances or fear to dominate our realities. Fear in particular paralyzes us and keeps us from community and the love of God. I put this process together to help myself manage fear. Hope it’s helpful. As always please call or write should you want to talk or have any questions.

  • Talk to family, mentors, spiritual director, friends about the SPECIFICS of Your fear story.

    • Talk about the dates, names, places, exact sentences, exact circumstances and feelings in and around the fear… BE SPECIFIC!

  • Discern the “What is” the reality of the circumstance

    • What is the circumstance? Is it stressful? Is it happy? Will it change? Who is leading it? Where is it? When is it? Does it have an end? What do you feel around the fear of the circumstances? Again, be specific.

  • Do

    • Occupy time with the “have to’s” of life and or the passions of life

      • Finish the project in the wings

      • Start the book you’ve always wanted to write

      • Play with your kids

      • Call a friend

      • Read a book

  • Develop a routine where you Invite God into the fear story

    • Allow the opportunity to ask God into the fear story.

    • Ask the Divine to be in the specific fear with you

    • Develop a time when you can talk specifically about the fear with God.

      • Morning while getting ready for the day

      • Walking or exercising

      • The moments before bed time

      • Use post it notes as a reminder to invite God into the fear

I tell my clients… Remember, you're not the Pope, not a nun, pastor, rabbi or Imam so take the burden off. Go about your day, allow yourself the opportunity to be conscious of the fear story and talk about it with your community and God. God gets you fear. God knows you will fear. God understands your need to hide, run and stay silent in the fear story but God is so willing to provide you shelter and refuge in his love.
