Born Again In Darkness
Late one night Jesus hears a knock. Peaking through the crack in the door, he sees a familiar face. A leader in the local religious community. A guy whose peers want Jesus dead and gone. This man would lose his powerful pastor position if folks knew he was talking to the dissident. Jesus was tired. He’d been miracle-ing all day and wanted to rest. But Jesus did what Jesus does; goes all in. “Rabbi,” his new friend says, “We get you're the teacher who has come from God. No one could do the stuff you're doing if God were not with him.” Jesus rubbed the sleep from his eyes, grabbed a pot of coffee and replied, “No one can SEE the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” “How can this be? How can a man be born again who is old?" Answered the man who came in the cover of night. Jesus wanders into the dining room, sits, pushes a full cup of joe across the table and answers, “Aren't you a spiritual teacher? Don't you see what me and my good people have been up to? How can I teach a “spiritual” dude spiritual things if you can't see what's right in front of you? After all, no one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man." Jesus stares into his coffee as the Pharisee contemplates what has been said. The conversation dips into morning, then Jesus sends Nicodemus back to where he came from. That walk home…the sun on the horizon, mist hanging in the air, people slowly coming awake and our Pharisee grabbed by the reality of a career held to ideology, process and dogmatic behavior. A life without the touching experience of the Divine. A life without love. In one night his world became born again. New ears. New eyes. New thoughts. New consciousness all within the greatest of spiritual ironies he found it through secrecy and the cover of darkness.
