Contemplation Tastes The Soul

We are looking to put away selfishness. Our attention to false self, ego and fear grow it, sustain it and pronounce it good. It can easily be justified with words like ambition, drive or success. These words have power and cultural assumption that level selfishness into an almost heroic standpoint for those who in fact achieve at any cost. We must be careful. Selfishness grows loneliness, depression and emotional unavailability. No one dreams of standing in their success alone and unavailable. But this is what selfishness produces. Thomas Merton asserts, “Even the desire of contemplation can be impure, when we forget that true contemplation means the complete destruction of all selfishness - the most pure poverty and cleanness of heart.” Take note… drill down and take inventory. Is your life simply your own, or are you fostering life and peace through love, through contemplation of Divine and God in you?

What does selfishness look like in your life?
